Tenerife Sur airport lies at the heart of the tourist area of southern Tenerife, in the town of Granadilla de Abona, located around 60 km from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Tenerife Sur was inaugurated by Queen Sofia on November 6, 1978.

In its first year the airport served more than one million passengers. By the end of 2006, 173,912,207 passengers had passed through the facilities of this airport.

Tenerife Sur operates 24 hours a day. It currently has more than 100 connections and is busiest on Fridays and during the winter. More than 150 companies operate in its facilities.

The airport is currently undergoing major infrastructure works; in particular, the passenger terminal is being enlarged to increase the airport’s capacity to meet air traffic demand.

In 2006 this airport serviced 8.845.668 passengers, 65,774 flights and 9,655 tonnes of cargo.
