Tenerife is one of the seven islands that form part of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, one of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain. This region is integrated into the European Union as an ultra-periphery region. Therefore, EU immigration and customs laws are applied with some exceptions. The archipelago has its own Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) which provides advantages to businesses established in this region. The archipelago has its own autonomic government and a regional Parliament with broad legislative competences. Each island has its own administration known as the Cabildo and each is divided into municipalities. The island of Tenerife has 31 municipalities. There are tourist communities on the coast, the atmosphere in the north is more traditional but the south is more cosmopolitan, which has a modern infrastructure and offers many leisure time activities.
