The growth of the population and of tourism has led to an increase in the daily flow of vehicles entering and exiting the city. For this reason the island had to invest in works to improve the capital’s motorway connections with the rest of the island.

The easiest way to enter the city from the south is to take the TF-1 to the TF-4, a four-lane motorway bordering the coast that is barely four km long. This motorway cuts through an industrial area and flows into the city at the Avenida de Constitución where the Recinto Ferial de Tenerife and the Parque Marítimo César Manrique are located. Alternatively, motorists can continue on the TF-1 motorway until they reach the Rambla General Franco exit which will take them to the centre of the city.

Motorists must take the recently remodelled TF-5 motorway to enter the city from the north, a motorway that has four lanes in both directions in the stretch that is in the city. Traffic coming off of the TF-5 mostly flows through Avenida Manuel Hermoso Rojas and Avenida Tres de Mayo (to go to the lower part of the city) and through the Ramblas near the Acidalio Lorenzo Municipal Pool.

In this area, the Avenida Tres de Mayo has been remodelled and a tunnel has been built that channels the majority of the outbound traffic underground.

The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has become one of the main ports of the country for passengers. In 2002 almost 1.5 million people came in and out of the port. The growing maritime traffic between islands and the arrival of numerous cruise ships has led to the need for new facilities.

In the near future, a project to join the port and the city created by the Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron will build an international cruise ship terminal and remodel the entire port complex. This is where the AutoReisen office is located.
