The space occupied by Puerto de la Cruz emerged from the sea in two volcanic stages, the latter occurring in 1430, which created a largely flat area whose only relevant outcropping is Montaña de Las Arenas, which has an altitude of 243 m. Without a doubt, the origin and development of Puerto de la Cruz well into the 19th Century is based almost exclusively on its commercial and port activity, which predates the existence of the city. After all, the city is named after the port and history confirms that the city's vocation has been to connect the island to the rest of the world. In the past it was considered the "key to the island", which explains why the city’s heraldic shield has a key on it.

In the pre-Hispanic period, the area now covered by Puerto de la Cruz held an aboriginal enclave, mostly in the La Paz area which has many caves in its cliffs. The plentiful water supplies made it easier to settle there. Archaeological studies have discovered that the Ladera de Martiánez holds a necropolis containing not only mummies but also bodkins and ceramics.
