The municipality of Yaiza, located in southern Lanzarote, is one of the largest districts of the island, spread out over 27,195 hectares of land. This municipality has some of the finest tourist attractions and natural landscapes. It was the first area conquered by the Spanish and the location of the first European enclave in the Canaries, known as Rubicón. In 1404 the Pope decreed that the modest church of San Marcial be transformed into a cathedral, giving rise to the archipelago’s first diocese.
It is one of the best maintained villages in the Canaries, for which it has been given numerous awards. This is readily apparent to visitors as they stroll through its peaceful and quiet streets past immaculate houses adorned with a variety of flowers and plants; streets that seem to be frozen in time.
Playa Blanca is a village located in southern Yaiza that serves as the maritime connection between Lanzarote and the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura through the Bocaina strait and from there it connects with the rest of the archipelago. Populated by inhabitants of Papagayo and Fuerteventura at the dawn of the 20th Century, it was and still is a seafaring village. The brilliant whiteness of its houses, the distinct ocean air and the conservation of and respect for its architecture are notable characteristics of this village, which along with its excellent geographic location, its climate and the wide array of quality hotels available make Playa Blanca an ideal tourist destination. Don’t miss the interesting maritime procession held during the fiesta celebrating Nuestra Sra. del Carmen, the patron saint of the village.
