The economy of this southern municipality is based on the tertiary sector, which has taken advantage of the hot, dry and permanently sunny climate to create a large tourist enclave. More than 60% of Arona’s population works in this sector.

The intense agricultural activity is concentrated in Valle de San Lorenzo, where bananas are increasingly grown to be sold on the Spanish mainland.

To a lesser degree, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and flowers (in green houses) are also cultivated to be exported to different European countries.

The farms are generally not very large, the biggest ones are located toward the coast, the medium-sized ones are in the centre of the municipality and the smallest are located at higher altitudes.

Raising cattle is in decline due to lack of water and the lure of earning money more easily in the services sector.
