This island was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1993 because of the significance of its natural qualities. The island has an Island Zoning Plan (PIO) which contemplates putting a cap on the number of tourists and the annual growth needed to reach that cap. The use of land is strictly regulated. Moreover, 12 enclaves are protected by the Canarian Natural Spaces Law and it also has one of the 12 Spanish National Parks: Timanfaya. 90% of its land has some kind of legal protection.
