The city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is located in the northeast of Tenerife in the Agüere Valley (the Guanche name for this part of the menceyato (kingdom) of Anaga) between the mountain ranges known as Macizo de Anaga and Macizo Central (Mt. Esperanza).

The history of this city is associated with the Spanish conquest of Tenerife because it was founded by Alonso Fernández de Lugo the conquistador and first adelantado of the island (from which the city’s nickname “City of the adelantados” is derived). It was most likely founded on July 27, 1496. Once the island was conquered, the new lords settled in this valley which had good sources of water, in particular a large lake and streams emanating from the mountains of Anaga which brought water to the city through what today we call Calle del Agua (Water street) or Calle Nava y Grimón.

In addition to being the first capital of the archipelago, La Laguna is the seat of the Nivariense Diocese and the location of the University of La Laguna campus.
