Gran Canaria is one of the seven islands that form part of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, one of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain. This region is integrated into the European Union as an ultra-periphery region. Therefore, EU immigration and customs laws are applied with some exceptions. The archipelago has its own Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) which provides advantages to businesses established in this region. The archipelago has its own autonomic government and a regional Parliament with broad legislative competences. Each island has its own administration known as the Cabildo and each is divided into municipalities. Gran Canaria has 21 municipalities.

Demographics: The total population of the island is 807,049 (2006), 47% of whom live in the capital.
