El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, is located in the extreme southwest of the archipelago. Its area of 278 km2 offers us a great variety of landscapes: from the arid lajiares and the volcanic formations in the south and west, to the fertile land in the Valle del Golfo, with vineyards and plantations in the northeast region, and to the dense pine forests and laurisilva in the centre of the island.

The coasts of El Hierro are treacherous and rocky, with inaccessible cliffs reaching as high as 1,000 m and some beautiful coves and natural tide pools that promise a refreshing swim in their waters. The Nisdafe plateau has fields and prairies, while in the pine forest fig trees and almond trees grow abundantly. We can also enjoy the legendary eternal springtime of the Canaries, with sub-tropical vegetation in the fertile regions that contrast with the fascinating volcanism found on other parts of the island.

Most visitors don’t take long to return to the island and some become truly addicted to its beauty. In the Patronato de Turismo office you can obtain a free guide which indicates the most interesting itineraries.
