Like in the rest of the archipelago, El Hierro contains a great deal of plant species that are endemic to the islands or to El Hierro itself; in particular sabinar and drago.

Without a doubt the most famous species is the El Hierro giant lizard (Galliotia Simonyi), which can measure up to 1.5 m. This species was thought to be extinct for a long time, but a similar variety was discovered in 1975. These animals, which measure up to 70 cm, live in La Fuga de Gorreta and are protected by law. The municipality of Frontera along with the village of Guinea publicly display some specimens that were raised in a centre dedicated to the recuperation of this endemic species.
