The city of Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, which forms part of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. It is located in the southeast of the island at 10 m above sea level.
The city was named for the reef (arrecife) which lies below it. This reef was created around a salt lake known as Charco de San Ginés. Arrecife covers 32.95 km2 and has a population of around 55,000.
Arrecife is the administrative and commercial centre of Lanzarote and half of the island’s population lives there. The international airport is located five minutes away from the capital and it has daily flights.
The city reflects its strong ties to the sea, its historic function as a defensive fort and its current role as a services oriented city dedicated to commercial and mercantile relations.
The island has a gentle topography that is barely broken by the mountain slopes located on its western border. This facilitates the circulation of jable (fine sand), blown by the trade winds.
